Sunrise Pier Fund

Sixty years of sunrises. One rebuild.

The Sunrise Pier has held up fishing lines, first dates, and quiet mornings since 1964. Last September's storm took out 40 feet of decking and half the pilings. We're rebuilding it plank by plank — with the neighborhood paying for it.

What happened

The storm surge took the north end first.

When the tide came up nine feet above normal, it tore out the last forty feet of decking and cracked a dozen pilings at the waterline. The county inspected it in October and confirmed what everyone already knew: it wasn't safe to reopen without a full rebuild of that section.

Rather than wait on a county budget cycle, a few regulars started a jar at the bait shop. That jar is now this fund — run by neighbors, not a contractor.

My father taught me to fish off that pier. Glad to put a plank back for the next kid who learns there.

The bait shop jar raised $900 before this fund even existed. This neighborhood was never going to let it stay broken.

Sponsored a plaque for my grandmother. She watched the sunrise from that pier every morning for thirty years.
